Description
Examines history and polity of the UMC & its immediate precursors from the late 19th century to the present, with an emphasis on current polity & the social & religious issues facing the denomination. Beginning with the establishment in last 19th century of American Methodism as a truly national church with an international reach through its missionary movements, the course examines the church's ongoing engagement with social & ecclesiastical issues over the 20th century & into the present. Also students the evolution of polity up to the current Book of Discipline. Pre-requisite PTH 232. This course is taught in conjunction with The Candler School of Theology at Emory University as DS 502.
